DEPT FOR ENVIRONMENT FOOD & RURAL AFFAIRS
I was tasked with designing a contemporary showcase brochure for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, highlighting the department's achievements over the year.
The idea was to create something that felt more like an editorial publication than a traditional government report. I wanted the design to feel fresh and accessible, using strong photography, considered typography and flexible layouts that gave the different stories room to breathe.
There was a real mix of subjects and information to bring together, so finding a consistent visual approach was important. The result was a publication that felt engaging and contemporary while keeping the content clear and easy to navigate.
DEPT FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE
This was one of the biggest and most demanding public sector publication projects I've worked on. A 140-page annual report bringing together a huge amount of information, financial data, charts, tables and content from multiple government departments.
My role was to design the annual report and also create templates for the art working team to produce a publication that made all of that information feel structured, consistent and easy to navigate.
There was an enormous amount of detailed artwork involved, from establishing the layouts and typographic hierarchy to making sure every chart, table and page worked together. With multiple stakeholders reviewing content, changes were coming in constantly, often right up against the deadline.
It was the sort of project where you needed to be thinking several steps ahead. Managing revisions, keeping track of different versions and making sure everything remained accurate was just as important as the design itself.
A huge undertaking, but one I really enjoyed seeing come together.
UK PAVILLION - EXPO 2020 DUBAI
Working on communications connected to the UK Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai was an opportunity to be involved in a project with a genuinely international audience.
The work needed to feel appropriate for the visually expressive environment of a global exhibition, while communicating clearly to a wide range of visitors.
It was an interesting project because of the scale of the event and the challenge of creating communications that would work for audiences from around the world.
GREAT.GOV
I've also worked on creative for national digital advertising screens, combining image retouching and design to produce large-format communications for public spaces.
These projects brought a different set of challenges. The creative needed to work at scale, often in busy environments where people might only see it for a few seconds.
My role involved developing the visual treatments, working with photography and creating finished artwork across different screen formats. Getting the composition, image quality and finer details right was particularly important when the finished work was going to be displayed at such a large size.
IOPC - HILLSBOROUGH INQUIRY
This was a particularly sensitive public sector project, and one that needed a very different approach.
I was responsible for designing a brochure connected to the Hillsborough Inquiry, where clarity, accuracy and respect for the subject matter were absolutely essential.
The focus was on considered typography, clear layouts and presenting the information in a way that was accessible and dignified.
PUBLIC HEALTH ENGLAND - E-Bug Recipe E-Book
At the other end of the spectrum was an educational recipe e-book for Public Health England's E-Bug programme, which was launched in schools across the UK.
The challenge here was making educational content appealing to younger audiences. I developed a colourful, friendly visual approach, combining photography, illustrations and easy-to-follow layouts to make the recipes engaging and accessible.
The design needed to be fun without becoming cluttered, with clear instructions and a visual structure that children could follow easily.
It was a nice change of pace from some of the more formal government projects, and rewarding to work on something designed to encourage children to get involved and learn.
